Description: Based on staff interviews, a staff member did not follow the program's positive guidance policy as stated in the parent handbook. Evidence: KinderCare's positive guidance policy states that staff are trained to use various techniques including redirection, praise and distraction to redirect children. "We take a proactive and preventive approach to guidance that reinforces appropriate behaviors rather than focusing on inappropriate behaviors." It was reported to Licensing that staff member #1 grabbed a child by the hand, forced him to hit himself in the face and stated "You don't like the way that feels do you?" The staff member acknowledged to the Director that "That is true. I did do that" By forcing the child to hit himself, the staff member is not using positive guidance as required by the program policy to redirect the child.


Action to be Taken: All staff will be retrained in "Positive Child Guidance" by February 1, 2016.

Evidence: On 10/29/2015 Staff member #1 forced a child to hit himself with his own hand in the face. The staff member admitted to using this form of discipline with the child. KinderCare's employee handbook states that unacceptable discipline methods include "spanking, grabbing, pinching or physical punishment..."


Action to be Taken: That staff member has been managed.

Don't take your kid there. Find another center without so many complaint . Find a nanny share. Go part time at work. Don't take your kid here.
Last week my son mentioned 2 of his old teachers. I asked him if he wanted to go visit. He said "no".
I said "why". He said "they don't have toys".
The toys were old and tattered. They play music off of scratched up CDs. Books are read from CDs with no attempt to create recognition from the sound to the image let alone words. The playground stuff has been the same for years.
Now that I know the process for CDA certification I know I was not told the truth about them having teachers working toward CDA.

The parents that are still there are new or just totally clueless about good child care.
Even if you may never get in go visit the Coop daycare in arlington. See what a good center is like and then compare it to the nonsense here.

They are still spraying weekly. (See inspection report below.) This is an old rundown building-- my guess is that if they stopped spraying, the roaches would come back. The director is evasive and will not answer questions about the spraying, so you should call the state inspector if you want to know what is really going on. The teachers in the infant room are great, but Kindercare Clarendon management (from the new center director on up to Portland corporate) drove us to the point of insanity and ultimately a center change. But our kids were older by that point and there are many more preschool options after age 3.

They are still spraying for roaches? Isnt that harmful to kids? gross

And when is the last time they changed the outside toys? It's been at least 3 years. Those poor babies same non stimulating stuff day after day.

I'm OP I saw them running all over the kitchen, In the class room... A Former teacher told me she saw one crawl up behind me and the "director " saw it too but I didn't see it. I'd go to put the sunscreen away Bam! A roach. Go to wash my hands bam a baby roach. I'm sure the teachers still keep their own foods and beverages oddly covered. Telltale sign they know what's up.

And clueless parents. My child is so different it's amazing. Real teachers. A real playground, real books that rotate. People with command of the language they teach my kid (English and knows English, Spanish and knows Spanish). I mentioned the roaches to them and they said they would quit if they had roaches in their workplace.
Just nasty and I wholly blame the regional director and kindercare the company. That director is just doing what she's told sadly she doesn't know any better herself. Paying all that money to have your child ignored on a hot playground . Makes no sense to me
