But it takes months from prelim to adjudication! Does the candidate wait all this time working for her previous employer, or not working?
In the old days companies (don't know about the govt) had "tanks" for new hires waiting for their clearances where they did... nothing much, really. I know someone who spent over a year sitting in the tank. Does this still happen?[/quote]

My agency used to do this but not any more. Now you don't get to start until everything is done. On average it takes a year from the offer if a person doesn't have a clearance. Obviously we lose a lot of people who can't wait around for a year.[/quote]
What about lower-level clearances like Secret - does the offer remain contingent until interim is granted? So the candidate keeps working at old job till the interim is processed, then gives 2-week notice?
