My daughter goes to one of the "bad" high schools in the NE consortium. My son graduated in 2012 and since that time the school has gotten worse. The problem in the school is the fighting (kids no longer get suspended). Gang members are bringing conflicts to the schools, there are more low-income students on this side of the county and that pulls the school surroundings down. I don't get on DCUM to berate lower income kids/families BUT I went to urban schools and grew up lower class myself. I was always a good student, but was surrounded by really bad kids and I had HORRIBLE teachers. I know I would've excelled in better schools but that was not an option for my parents. This year there has been a shooting threat and numerous fights at my daughters schools. It took her a few years to even get comfortable going to this school. I'm so glad she is graduating this year, but if I could choose again---buy in Olney or upper Rockville if 600k is your housing range. Don't try to force your kids to go to school in "bad" schools. It is not worth it. Even socializing is an issue because the other kids can't afford to get together on the weekends and do normal teen-age activities.
