A 22 classroom addition will start in January. I think it is a perfect example of diversity - cultural and socio-economic. Everyone is a minority as there are no majorities. I guess if you don;t like that it would be one of the worst middle school in MCPS

Why do you say this?

And yes, you should be scared because there are worse MS in the country.

What is that based on?? It is an 8 on Great Schools. Middle Schools are not generally amazing but my kids have done well there. I like the new principal.

No the PPP, but I'm guessing maybe there are too many lower SES in that school for that PP's taste. And it's over crowded.

Correct, those are all great schools and student bodies. The work hard, play sports, take challenging classes and are generally respectful students.

And most are very wealthy kids who have every advantage possible.

Why are people so stupid?

That's right. It's not the goddamn school. It's the MONEY the rich folks pour into the schools.

Actually, I fully believe it's the student body. I am a college alumni interviewer and there's just a lot of really neat kids in many of these schools. And no, their parents, who by far both work, are not all "rich folks".

I really hope you are not raising your children with as much hate, fake envy and rage as you seem to have. You energy could be used in much better ways.

oh - Thanks for proving my point about people being so stupid! How old are you, btw?

Honey Bunny, the parents of my kids work 2 - sometimes 3 jobs. They don't have have money. They can barely survive day to day.

Go fuck off and stay in your La La Land. Maybe one day reality will make you realize that these "neat" (who uses that word?) kids have every goddamn advantage in the world. Even a $400,000 home is out of reach for many of the kids I teach.

And I'm a hater? lol! I love my students - and I do it by not pitying them to their faces. But I recognize that they're at a disadvantage. You, on the other hand, have no clue.

Are you a teacher? Why do you need to work 2-3 jobs? The MCPS teachers' pay doesn't look too bad, together with excellent benefits including insurance, retirement and off days.

I know some 2-teachers families, it seems they are doing quite well.

I'm an employee of one of the MCPS high schools referred to in this thread as one of the "bad" ones. I'm also a relatively recent (last 10 years) graduate of one of the "bad" ones. The level of entitlement in this thread is astonishing. The generalizations applied to the incredible kids I work with every day breaks my heart. MCPS has a fantastic school system and while some schools are in the news for different reasons, every single one has the resources a student needs to succeed. There's not a single high school in the county that will prevent your child from getting into what ever college they want. As a caucasian person I was a minority at my high school and the perspective it provided me has been invaluable in shaping my life.

You are 28 years old or younger, a product of MCPS and embarking on being a lifer within MCPS. This is NOT a good school system. It sucks for everyone. It breeds mediocrity at best and robs kids of their potential and educational opportunities to provide lifetime employment for fools like you.

The rich kids will still go to college, perhaps not as good a college as if they came from a different school system, but they will still go. The rich kids will still be successful in life because their opportunities are not limited to the bozos running MCPS. The middle class kids will go into lackluster community colleges and emerge with limited skills for the job market. The poor kids will continue failing while MCPS leadership hides their failing scores to hide the system's failures. Fools like you prop up this system. Thank you for being part of the problem rather than part of the solution.

Thank you for this. Signed very content parent in the DCC, whose kids have already passed her academically.

My daughter goes to one of the "bad" high schools in the NE consortium. My son graduated in 2012 and since that time the school has gotten worse. The problem in the school is the fighting (kids no longer get suspended). Gang members are bringing conflicts to the schools, there are more low-income students on this side of the county and that pulls the school surroundings down.

I don't get on DCUM to berate lower income kids/families BUT I went to urban schools and grew up lower class myself. I was always a good student, but was surrounded by really bad kids and I had HORRIBLE teachers. I know I would've excelled in better schools but that was not an option for my parents.

This year there has been a shooting threat and numerous fights at my daughters schools. It took her a few years to even get comfortable going to this school. I'm so glad she is graduating this year, but if I could choose again---buy in Olney or upper Rockville if 600k is your housing range. Don't try to force your kids to go to school in "bad" schools. It is not worth it.

Even socializing is an issue because the other kids can't afford to get together on the weekends and do normal teen-age activities.

To me, the "worst" schools have the following traits:

1. building issues - school is falling apart; mold, etc; no playground space
2. majority of teachers are terrible
3. leadership in school is terrible, ie, principal, etc
4. a lot of kids are unruly in class and those kids that want to learn can't because of the unruliness. There are always a few of such kids in any school, but when you have a good % of them like this, there can't be any learning going on.
5. zero extras - P.E, art, music, library --- yes, these are considered extras these days

What school fits into these traits?
