People self-medicate and get addicted. My friend who is in treatment for depression has decided to quit drinking. I thought her nightly glass of wine was ok, but she feels dependent on it so she's joining AA. It has really opened my eyes to how even a little alcohol can impact a life negatively.[/quote] Addiction is an illness because it causes a degeneration in physical and cognitive functioning. Addicts are physically dependent on their addiction and become sick when they don't get it. They are cognitively impaired and lose a great deal of executive functioning. People make a choice to take the drug or drink, but when they become addicted, they are suffering from a physical and psychological disorder. [/quote]
