HSV 1 and 2 are the same. Both can be oral or genital. My husband has it and I don't. We don't kiss when he has or feels an outbreak coming and no oral for me at all. I'm not willing to risk that.
They are not the same. HsV-2 is always genital Herpes. Meaning you can only get it through sexual activity. HsV-1 can be on your genitalia but it can also be other places-most often as a cold sore in the mouth area. People can get HSV-1 as children, from sharing utensils, kissing on the cheek etc…My husband and all of his siblings have HSV-1 that they got as children. Both his parents have it. We have been together 20 years and he has had a cold sore twice. He always knows when he is getting one. We refrain from anything while he has one but he has meds for it too when it happens. And I would never give up oral, it’s been 20 years and i’m still negative. Actually just tested for it this past year again. HSV-1 is something we see people with all the time-cold sores you can’t hide. There is so much less of a stigma for it because often times it was totally out of your control. Typically HSV1 you only get in the place you were initially infected-so if it’s on the genitalia then that’s where it will typically be again, so if it started as a cold sore it most likely will always be a cold sore.
