I don’t think Usha and JD are happily married. I think they are in a committed marriage, which is a totally different animal. They are a professional unit at this time. They’re absolutely not going to be together for a lifetime or anything.
It’s weird. No idea what hit Usha over the head to marry this hillbilly.
I went to YLS. It is a small place without a lot of dating options plus a feeling that you’re sort of in a close community together. I’m pretty sure they were in the same “small group” which is a group of about 10 students that have one first semester small group class together plus all their first semester classes together so naturally bond and form study groups together. Marriages from small group are not uncommon. I think maybe Jed or Amy was their small group professor and it’s not uncommon for small group professors to host get together and such. My small group professor was a nice guy but definitely not the kind to be bonding with students. There was one marriage out of my small group of 10. Anyway you spend three years with the same group of like 200 people and it’s very insular and everyone is doing the same things and having lots of intellectual conversations, so I think it makes for some pairings that you might not see in a normal world.
Nearly all attractive charismatic students at my T15 matriculated de facto engaged. Usha and JD were 25 year old 1Ls. Weird terminally single strivers like Usha and JD immediately orbit creepy over-involved professors and will do anything for them, including enter arranged relationships.
So many people at YLS do Rhodes and similar fellowships that it’s common to enter at 24 (as I did). And a lot of them are single. I really don’t think it’s an arranged relationship. That really doesn’t happen. But it’s like living in a small weird village. Relationships develop do to proximity and shared experiences. I am sure he probably seemed sweet and a little different from your average YLS guy and he was probably really attentive to her. She probably seemed really smart and like she knew all the right things to say/do and he was probably blown away that he looked twice at him. I would guess that Usha maybe did have a boyfriend or two but nothing serious and people who are too tasteful and not lookkkg for press attention so wouldn’t come forward. I mean, if you are like a professor of philosophy at some college or a neurologist at Mayo Clinic or whatever are you really gong to go to the press with some “I dated Usha for like 3 months in college!” story? No.
