If it is a big nothing then why sign it and give the corrupt bully gov an opportunity to exploit them? Why not stand up and say we aren’t doing any of this already and won’t be used as a pawn in your own fake news campaign? Says a lot about UVA.
Exactly! The person trying to claim this is a “giant nothingburger” is some MAGA UVA grad trying to astroturf what really happened.
Because government investigations are extremely costly and disruptive, and if you can resolve one while giving absolutely nothing up, it almost always makes sense to do so. To resolve this one, they agreed not to violate the law in the future. Whether they signed or not, the government could still come back later and investigate if they violated the law later. This is truly a non-event.
For a “non-event,” as you keep insisting this to be, it certainly seems to be a widely news-worthy event to the press. Or will you now try to paint this as “leftist propaganda!” or some equally ridiculous claim?
This is a valid point. I googled it, and the AP is indecently reporting on this. https://apnews.com/article/university-virginia-trump-deal-dei-b61f24c918f801a292c85bcba5f17079 Doesn’t seem to be the “non-event” PP keeps claiming it to be.
It's not a long article, but this part is interesting. Virginia’s settlement follows other agreements signed by Columbia and Brown universities to end federal investigations and restore access to federal funding. Columbia paid $200 million to the government, and Brown paid $50 million to Rhode Island workforce development organizations. Along with omitting a fine, Virginia’s agreement is less prescriptive than those signed by Columbia and Brown. The deal requires Virginia to adhere to four pages of terms, compared to nine at Brown and 22 at Columbia. It includes a clear affirmation of academic freedom, with an acknowledgement that the government “does not aim to dictate the content of academic speech or curricula.”
