You need to go to Austria and try their tortes. And countries around that make the same. There is a cake and then there are Viennese tortes. Heaven in the mouth.
The taste is very different. I lived in Germany and disliked the desserts. Black Forest cake is gross. They have no flavor. They look incredible and you think it’s going to be great. I only eat one bite, because it’s so disappointing. I feel the same about Korean dessert. Just too bland. If you like American crème brûlée, cookies, brownies, or pies, the level of sweetness is much more intense than European and Asian desserts. I do enjoy wegmans and balduccis desserts. Wegmans cakes, fruit tarts, and macaroons are delish. Balduccis chocolate cake is really good. Whole Foods used to have a yellow and choclo layer cake that was amazing. I also like their chocolate mousse.
I travel to Germany and other Northern European countries enough and there's no shortage of that awful sugary fondant / glaze on so many of their baked sweets that adds a pointless layer of sugar on an already sweet item. Will concur on the whole Americans win by a landslide for sugary sweetness but it's also pretty easy to avoid excess sugar in the US. Just don't go to the Cheesecake factory!
