No. I always felt that Bush — with Cheney— was a terrible president, but he wasn’t a completely terrible human being. I could imagine having an enjoyable dinner with him and Laura — as long as we stayed away from most political topics. I think he quite often meant well — but couldn’t really understand or anticipate some of the huge problems that could be expected to accompany what I view as terrible policies. No Child Left Behind is one example. Trump, though, was long seen in NY as a racist, a dishonest and bullying businessman, and as someone you would not want to get stuck in an elevator with. Some people adore that. It’s a very different vibe. I don’t think people ever used words like “malignant narcissist “ and progressive “dementia “ about Bush, for all his highly problematic decisions.
I guess you need to go back to that time. Seems you have forgotten what was said about GWB by the left, again and again.
I haven't forgotten--I am one of the earliest PPs. Back then and now I say: Bush was a liar and an absolutely awful president. Back then and now I say, I don't care (and neither should anyone!!!) that he is a "nice guy" in the neighborhood. The estimates on the civilian deaths in Iraq vary but are in the hundreds of thousands. Every single one of those is on George W Bush. Let's stick with deaths for a moment: how many deaths have already been caused and are currently being caused by the wiping out of USAID??? Oxfam is estimating 3 million potential preventable deaths per year. https://www.oxfamamerica.org/explore/issues/making-foreign-aid-work/what-do-trumps-proposed-foreign-aid-cuts-mean/ Even if you don't care about the deaths of non-Americans (I know the Trump administration does not), it is assenine not to realize how the diseases will of course hurt Americans as well. Onto American deaths: how many were caused by Trumps insane response/non-response to Covid??? A Brown University study analuzes how the astoundingly high US death toll was a result not of the US preparedness--we were in fact positioned very well--but to systemic failures in the U.S. response. https://pandemics.sph.brown.edu/why-did-best-prepared-country-world-fare-so-poorly-during-covid So, even when we stick with the worst of W, Trump beats him easily. For what it's worth, W "respected" democracy and our institutions enough to know he had to lie. It's horrible, but it is even more terrifying to have someone who is brazenly and systematically destroying our democracy. No one compares to Trump. He is in a category all by himself.
