Fares at IAD, while not cheap, are competitive with BWI and Southwest.  I am the same distance from BWI and IAD and when flying domestically compare the two airports.  United is often cheaper at IAD, than SW at BWI.  I avoid DCA because I hate the GW Parkway traffic.

Also, I don’t know what you’re talking about with “empty gates” at Dulles.  It’s always plenty busy when I’m there.  If there is a lack of domestic routes, from other carriers, it’s because United has created a massive hub that most carriers can’t compete with.  Similar to Delta in Atlanta and American at Miami.  On the International side, there are a ton of choices at IAD.[/quote]
