It has lots of spare landing/takeoff slots for additional flights, rather than having every single slot allocated to some flight (as DCA does).

All of these factors make Dulles one of the easiest and lowest risk airports to land at or takeoff from.

That said, people are correct that one is much more likely to die in a car accident than in an aircraft accident, at least within the USA. (Nepal or Bhutan might be different, not sure.)

But their fares are high due to fees. Which is why so many airlines prefer DCA. Dulles has a ton of empty gates and nobody wants them.

BS.

IAD’s gates are all being used, a new 14-gate concourse is being built, and the airport just reclaimed the top spot in passenger traffic in 2024 over both BWI and DCA.

For me, flights out of Dulles are always more expensive and BWI is too far with traffic. I can take public transport to DCA and will take my chances. I'd take any flight over driving around the DMV.

Or on the good awful 1970s people movers.

The people mover hardship at IAD is exaggerated. It’s not that bad. If you hate them that much, take the subway.

It’s not always available (and if it is, it’s not obvious.) DP. But the train takes forever too and the walkways. DCA is much more compact and quick.

The trains at Dulles don’t take “forever.” Of course, DCA is quicker. It’s a fraction the size of Dulles- a huge airport, and BWI- not huge, but significantly bigger than DCA.

Fares at IAD, while not cheap, are competitive with BWI and Southwest. I am the same distance from BWI and IAD and when flying domestically compare the two airports. United is often cheaper at IAD, than SW at BWI. I avoid DCA because I hate the GW Parkway traffic.

Also, I don’t know what you’re talking about with “empty gates” at Dulles. It’s always plenty busy when I’m there. If there is a lack of domestic routes, from other carriers, it’s because United has created a massive hub that most carriers can’t compete with. Similar to Delta in Atlanta and American at Miami. On the International side, there are a ton of choices at IAD.
