If we accepted an offer and paid the initial fee, but didn’t “accept your assignment” via sports engine can we withdraw and choose another club? We just got an offer from the club she wants, but didn’t think she was high up on their list
You need to really look into this and verify. I think you are on the hook for the whole fee for the whole season and not just the deposit.
Don't take this as a legal advice, but a coach told me that it's hard to enforce. Apparently the commitment becomes enforceable after the player plays the first game on the club roster. But imagine the club suing a family for the club fee, then the player showing up for practice and games: that would be a really tense environment. I am familiar with a case where the player could not make it to the practices as scheduled by the club, so the club had to let the player go and refunded what the player paid in club fees. It was a few weeks after the tryouts and the club had to look for another uncommitted player.
Did the club ask for a financial commitment that was triggered as soon as you accept the offer? I suppose they could do that, but its really shady. The club contract is usually the legally binding document, not the offer letter. Every club has different terms and conditions. Most clubs send the contract after the open tryout period. Once you sign that, you are subject to T&Cs in the contract, which for most clubs is that you owe for the entire season because you took a spot on a team they can't fill anymore because tryouts are over. immediately tied to the offer letter. For the good clubs, if you ask to get out during the open tryout period and you have a reasonable reason, they try to accomodate most clubs (at least the reasonable/ethical ones) will tell you they are disappointed but let you out. You won't get an offer from them again though, which is probably good if they are asking for a financial deposit directly tied to the offer.
