How the heck can folks fit in tryouts for more than one team with that requirement?

With the low price, small roster size, and reasonable level of competitiveness, the demand for MVSA is high. Unless a player decides they want to play for a higher level team, families are generally pretty loyal to MVSA and will come back year after year, so people are going to prioritize getting to MVSA tryouts.

Because of the long history of the club and length of time MVSA many of their coaches have been around, MVSA is a bit of a throwback. They do little recruiting (although many MCPS HS coaches are MVSA coaches so there is a bit of a pipeline there), they have resisted the trend of teams going to multiple qualifiers, and even their 1s teams go to a lot of regional tournaments. I think sticking with this tried and true formula continues to work for the most part, but I do think as the level of play continues to increase (both locally and nationally) MVSA is going to continue to slip in terms of their teams' rankings within the region. But I don't know that is a concern for the most part. There is always going to be a place for a good quality club at a reasonable price. Every club doesn't need to be striving for open bids and trying to send their entire 18s team to play in college every year. MVSA players who are looking for something more will go to other clubs and will be well trained when they get there.

I feel like the slip may be starting for MVSA, many players apparently left this year for other clubs. It felt like a lot more scrambling this year for MVSA, which is surprising because like PP said, they tend to be loyal. Not sure what changed this year.

Don't feel sorry for MVSA - they will always attract solid players to their teams. The club might be a bit too loyal to some returning players who don't play that well and this might be the reason why some of the top players decide too look for a more competitive environment.

I am curious, what happens now that it's past the official tryout period? Do those offers stand? Are they rescinded? Can players still accept? Are these players still waiting to see what shakes out today, but risk losing the offers they received? Thanks!!

The club can send offers to other players because the original offers are no longer binding. They likely go back-and-forth with the players on their waitlist to see which one is still available. They may still accept players on the roster, even if they didn't reply by 10 pm, but they are actively trying to fill the roster as soon as they can. The longer they wait, the less likely to get quality players.

Thank you!!

If you really want to get on the MVSA roster, you do it. We were lucky because the timing didn't overlap with the tryout of any other club we wanted to try out for.

All clubs offer on the same day of tryouts. If you haven't received one, you could be a possible alternate based others declining their offers. You won't know and may have to wait after Tuesday.

That might be the case with the more desperate clubs. Some clubs start making offers only after they see everyone.

That makes no sense.
A strong club will have strong players trying out on Day 1 and they won’t wait when they see a good fit on first day.
Sure they may leave a few slots open if they are waiting for a player who was at invite-clinics to attend the following day, but they aren’t holding all offers until Sunday or Monday. That would be insane bc the club would not want to risk that strong players would assume they weren’t interested and might accept at a different club before the offer comes in.

Let me put it differently, maybe it makes more sense. MVSA announced during the tryouts that they want to see all the players before they send out offers. Players who want to get on the MVSA roster will not feel offended for not receiving an offer from MVSA after the first day of tryouts. They are not going to accept an offer from a different club just because it came their way earlier.

The only bigger club that I am aware of that doesn’t make offers until after both days of tryouts is MVSA. They also make it pretty clear that if you don’t go to both days of tryouts that it reduces the likelihood of making a team.

You should have talked to the club that your DD really wanted before accepting the other offer. I agree that you may lose the money you paid if you decide to accept the other offer.

It’s our first year. We don’t know how it works

But that’s on you, PP.
You will definitely burn bridges and should not have accepted until tonight if you were unsure. It’s really not fair to the clubs or the other girls who could have been called sooner. Now you have to do this whole “oops just kidding” move to a club who thought she was solid and they will have to go back to their alternates (who may already have been told that their rosters are full!) to offer a slot. Really not great, PP

But it happens….and people move on. so once you get it straightened out, hope she has a great season!

You need to really look into this and verify. I think you are on the hook for the whole fee for the whole season and not just the deposit.

Don't take this as a legal advice, but a coach told me that it's hard to enforce. Apparently the commitment becomes enforceable after the player plays the first game on the club roster. But imagine the club suing a family for the club fee, then the player showing up for practice and games: that would be a really tense environment. I am familiar with a case where the player could not make it to the practices as scheduled by the club, so the club had to let the player go and refunded what the player paid in club fees. It was a few weeks after the tryouts and the club had to look for another uncommitted player.

As a general practice, I think it’s bad form to withdraw after you’ve accepted and potentially a breach of some type of contract that you may have signed when making the initial payment, but I do agree a club probably would likely not file suit to enforce. If you decide to try to withdraw, I’d suggest doing so asap. Waiting longer makes it less likely that the next player that the club would make an offer to will still be available which could increase hard feelings.

Did the club ask for a financial commitment that was triggered as soon as you accept the offer? I suppose they could do that, but its really shady.

The club contract is usually the legally binding document, not the offer letter. Every club has different terms and conditions. Most clubs send the contract after the open tryout period. Once you sign that, you are subject to T&Cs in the contract, which for most clubs is that you owe for the entire season because you took a spot on a team they can't fill anymore because tryouts are over.

immediately tied to the offer letter. For the good clubs, if you ask to get out during the open tryout period and you have a reasonable reason, they try to accomodate most clubs (at least the reasonable/ethical ones) will tell you they are disappointed but let you out. You won't get an offer from them again though, which is probably good if they are asking for a financial deposit directly tied to the offer.
