I'm Eastern European and agree this is completely American thing. Growing up in former USSR, my mom was always telling me not to look at men's height at all. Women are pretty tall in my family, so I was told as long as he's my height or taller it's fine. Men were in shortage post WWII so other qualities than the height (like ability to provide, education, smartness) were what I was taught to look at.

Ukrainian president is indeed short - 5'7. His wife is 5'5. She's a screenwriter, they met when he was acting. When she wears hills she towers taller than him. That was considered pretty normal for Ukraine&Russia[/quote]
