She kept paying the mortgage on an inherited house. If you don't buy a house in DC, you won't even know that you need to change the tax status. The mortgage servicer handles your property tax payments. I'm assuming that an extended family member was living in the home after the grandparents passed, so Alsobrooks probably didn't even receive any tax notices. This really is a nothing burger. In terms of her PG County home, she's actually been overpaying her taxes because she didn't make her more expensive current house her "homestead." She's been getting the homestead benefit on a crappy townhouse.
My coworker lives two homes down from her “crappy” townhouse. It’s a very nice neighborhood, with equestrian facilities in the community. If it was in MoCo it would be 1.5M. For a townhouse.
The "equestrian facility" home is her current, more expensive house (Redfin value $750K). That's the one where she is NOT taking the homestead, thus overpaying her property taxes. The homestead is still attached to the previous PG County townhouse in Bowie valued at only $400K. Thus, she is overpaying PG County property taxes. And no one cares what it would cost "if it was in MoCo." It's in PG.
Why did OP start this thread then? This "issue" sounds like a nothingburger.
Well, CNN wrote a breathless article about how she skirted $14K in DC property taxes on a property she sold 6 years ago by not removing the senior homestead designation after she inherited the property from her grandparents. But it's pretty clear she wasn't even aware that she owed the taxes. So who knows. But the Hogan campaign *cough* I mean, CNN, definitely dedicated a lot of time to tracking down her historical property tax records from both DC and MD to note the discrepancy.
