I was surprised to find out that University of Richmond is about as difficult to get into as UVA or W&M. I'm a life long VA resident, and I've barely heard of the school. You would think a school that's so selective would have decent name recognition. Can anyone not originally from VA offer any insight as to how it's regarded?
Acceptance rate is not selectivity. Uof R is a well regarded school, but they accept a slightly lower tier of student, comparing within high schools for relevance, than UVA and WM, as far as scores, course rigor. UofR is slightly less selective than W&L, but W&L often takes students who do not get into UVA , so it is not too competitive either. Davidson/Wellesley/Bowdoin are more well regRded and more selective than UofR and W&L, yet that group is a notch under the top5 LACs. UofR is considered like a Colby in the Northeast: good school but not close to elite.
Davidson is in no way more selective or well regarded than W&L.
It is from our area: NY/NJ top privates send higher tier of kids to Davidson, lots of overlap w Bowdoin admits.. W&L is more like a Colby.
W&L is higher than Davidson for all stat comparison points. W&L ACT Composite is 35/34/33 for 75th/50th/25th. Davidson is 34/32/21. SAT M + V (since Davidson does not provide SAT Composite) is 1530/1490/1410 for W&L and 1510/1455/1360 for Davidson. For Top 10% of class, it is 81.4% for W&L and 68% for Davidson.
W&L is a DIII school while Davidson is a DI school. The comparison between the non-athlete admitted students at the two schools would unquestionably yield very different results.
So you are saying the difference is Davidson has dumber athletes?
Exactly. Just like the Ivy League. I went to Duke and can tell you that there is typically a substantial difference between the academic profiles of the athletes in comparison to the non-athletes. Duke is large enough that this delta gets spread out across a wide pool of students so it's not noticeable. Both Richmond and Davidson are small enough that the delta has an actual impact on the admitted/enrolled student averages. My neighbor is currently being recruited by Cornell and Columbia for football. This kid is a solid B student and there is no way he'd get into either of these schools without his athletic prowess. Not knocking him, just recognizing that he brings something other than academic ability to the table.
