Real companies would not spend any resource over a measly $2000. My boss retired from Freddie a while ago, they kept paying her for another year, then asked her for the money back. She said they need to refund her the tax she had already paid to IRS and made sure IRS would not come after her. That was the end of it. A coworker was put on the bench without pay at a consulting firm. HR messed up, paid her more than a year, then asked for the money back. I told her to tell HR the same thing my boss said.
