I got an email from the same guy and he has the audacity to call me.

You're going to have to do some research here. Research your state attorney general's consumer protection division, the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB), Fair Credit Reporting Act, Fair Debt Collection Act, etc. See if there's a Reddit thread.

read up on validating a debt and other processes from removing items from a credit report. If a debt collector has it now, I would be willing to bet it is unlikely they can validate the debt

It is a scam. Real companies would not spend any resource over a measly $2000.

My boss retired from Freddie a while ago, they kept paying her for another year, then asked her for the money back. She said they need to refund her the tax she had already paid to IRS and made sure IRS would not come after her. That was the end of it.

A coworker was put on the bench without pay at a consulting firm. HR messed up, paid her more than a year, then asked for the money back. I told her to tell HR the same thing my boss said. End of story.

I ignored something similar and received a cancellation of debt 1099-C for $1800 that had to report as income on my taxes. So frustrating because it wasn’t my debt but since I ignored it I was worried that the irs would then come after me.

Read the five pages before this - it's clearly a scam. Ignore or tell him you think he's a scammer and you'll report if he contacts you further.
