BC for sure Michigan has amazing history departments but the size is comically large - Just way too many kids
+100 BC has less than 10k. UM has 33k.
You make this assumption that the 33k undergrads are all lumped into the same mass of students. When you separate out the classes, there are about 8,000-8500 pear year at Michigan. They are all jumbled together across different dorms as freshmen, but as sophomores and going forward, they generally tend to self-segregate based on friend groups and which "school" they are in, Engineering, Ross, etc,. So you have to look at it more as an opportunity to "find their people" than it being so big. It is easy to cut down the size based on activities, clubs etc.
And the 8k are 2k each year.
