If deferral is from Northeastern then that’s a sign of a weak application. Not sure about Tulane. Help your kid find a school they are happy with that has a realistic acceptance rate. Sounds like you have gotten a lot of bad advice and the school list is all over the place. My family also made many mistakes so don’t feel bad, it’s a horrible confusing process.
I think NU deferral is Northwestern. The ED admission rate is something like 19-22% and it’s unclear if a deferral is a soft rejection or means there is still a chance. Tulane has been filling as much as 2/3rds of the class with ED, not sure if this cycle they are trying to pull that back a little but what that means is the EA acceptance rate has been something like 10% in the past. Really it comes down to how much risk and how happy they are with the safety schools. If they would be extremely unhappy attending one of the safeties/state flagships, which if you look at some of the RD acceptance rates for the reaches it’s like 90% or more will be rejected, they need to beef up the target schools plus show some love to Bucknell which is the more likely RD acceptance from that list. If they are fine with the state schools/flagships and rather wait out RD including deferrals, they still need to have targets that have a higher acceptance rate like if they loved Williams, what is the 20-35% RD acceptance rate similar school. I will also add schools keep the ED2 rates closely held and publish the total ED rate so while there is often a bump for ED2 vs RD it’s hard to know how much.
