I am married to a GS-14 who doesn’t want to ever be a GS-15 unless it’s non-supervisory. We have done the math and it doesn’t make sense for him to take on the extra work and being on-call for a minor (to us) pay bump. His flexibility and work life balance is more valuable to us because we have young kids. I am topped out at a salary similar to a maxed out 15 because I mommy-tracked myself. Together we’re doing fine financially and we still have the work/life balance we want at this phase of life. We also look at our private / federal job mix as good diversification in times of recession. Based on our industries, it’s unlikely we’d be laid off at the same time.

If you want to sit back and be a spoiled princess, no a GS14 probably won’t cut it. If you want to have a high powered, lucrative career, you will probably want a spouse who can pick up kids at school and flex his schedule. [/quote]
