Get a small farm 10-20 acres that is 75% wooded in New England or Update New York.  Build an off grid house that has a cool cellar. Start a small orchard. Get a chicken coop. Start a large garden with perennials (eg asparagus, blueberries, raspberries, Jerusalem artichoke…) another one with annuals. Fence everything in and get netting for the top to stop the critters as much as you can.  Make sure there are sugar maples in your forest bonus if there are apple trees. Buy seeds and seed starter containers.  Build a green house.  Learn to use an axe and to boil down maple sap.  Make hard cider if you have enough apple trees.  Eventually add a few sheep and goats too.

The ravening nyc hordes would probably not last 10 minutes if they had to milk a cow or chop firewood.  Probably unless they were tough immigrants who can deal with adversity.   They will get it work and be fine.[/quote]
