Guns are the problem. However, unless the GOP and NRA lose their own family members in gun violence why would they care? Do you think they have any empathy with the ordinary people who are being killed?
No, criminals and murderers are the problem, along with a media and social environment that is the functional equivalent of the operant conditioning that military uses to desensitize soldiers to killing.
All countries have criminals and murderers. Our country is the only one that lets them easily obtain weapons of war.
“Weapons of war.” Catchy phrase. Completely inapposite. No military in the world uses semi-automatic weapons. None of these murderers is using artillery, mines, air dropped bombs, missiles, etc. I haven’t checked whether any of them might have used a fully automatic weapon, but I can’t think of one.
I know, dear. It’s much easier to focus on semantics than argue that “ur freedums” justifies the deaths of thousands of people per year.
Actually, one of the several things that “justifies” private firearm ownership is the millions of times they are used each year to stop criminal assault, generally without a shot being fired. “Dear.”
What about those of us who don’t want guns on our streets for defensive OR offensive purposes? Why can’t we just live like the people in other countries with adequate regulations?
You see, that’s what “choice” is about. Self-defense is a natural right. You don’t get to choose how other people are able to protect themselves, or what recreational activities they engage in. They’re not “your” streets. They’re everybody’s streets, and gun owners are part of “everybody.” As for “adequate” regulation, I’ll bet a quarter that you don’t have the first clue what gun laws already exist in the US generally or DC in particular. “Gun control” has been touted since at least 1968 (and actually since at least 1934 when the National Firearms Act took effect) as the solution to every social ill. The fact that people like you are still complaining is incontrovertible evidence that restrict the rights of decent people doesn’t change the behavior of criminals. “Back in the day,” kids took guns, including actual military rifles, to school for sponsored marksmanship activities or after school recreation. Nobody shot up the schools. Why was that? What changed? There are millions of guns in the US. If a magic magnet somehow lifted them all away, they’d be replaced, at least for the criminal element, more or less immediately. Prohibition and confiscatory laws didn’t work for booze and they don’t work for drugs. What would make guns different. Criminals import literal tons of narcotics into the US. They can import guns too if there’s a market. Gun laws are inherently racist in their origin and their application. They were instituted to keep freed slaves from arming themselves against depredation. Rich people have always had gun permits and armed private security. Poor people are left to the mercy of criminal sociopaths.
Gun control is racist, and its foundations are entirely rooted in racial bigotry. That is simply a fact.
