I do.
DC has at least the following gun laws:
1. All firearms must be registered.
2. Unlawful to possess unregistered firearm.
3. Unlawful to possess ammunition without registered firearm.
4. Lengthy list of banned long guns by name and/or characteristics.
5. Specified list of handguns allowed -- no "Saturday Night Specials."
6. Unlawful to carry firearm openly.
7. Unlawful to carry pistol without a license.
8. Training with actual target exam required for license.
9. Places where licensed pistol can be carried highly restricted.
10. Ammunition carried with licensed pistol extremely limited.
11. No open or vehicular long gun carry.
12. No possession of firearms or ammunition by minors, prohibited persons (felons, drug users, violent mentally ill).
13. No private sale of firearms.
14. Prepurchase safety training.
15. Background check on all purchases.
16. Longstanding (at least the 1970's) limit to 10 round magazine capacity.
17. Negligent firearm use unlawful
18. Criminal firearm use unlawful.
19. Use of firearm in crime of violence, drug crime, etc., unlawful.
I’ll agree it’s “whacky,” given how absolutely useless all these laws have proven, but it’s no “free for all.”
Why are you ignoring the fact that DC does not have closed borders and other states fail in both regulation and enforcement of guns. It doesn’t matter what a single state does with no adequate federal regime.
Why are you ignoring the fact that interstate sale of handguns except through a federally licensed dealer is already unlawful, as is sale to or possession of firearms by felons and other prohibited persons? And your “closed borders” admits that absent some kind of magic force field around the entire country, nothing can stop firearms from coming into one place from another if people are willing to risk the penalties associated with that. Nowhere has “closed borders.” Not even North Korea. And certainly not the US.
That PP also thinks Switzerland has “closed borders”. And apparently is trying to argue that these fictitious “closed borders” are what is stopping Swiss people from committing mass shootings. So I wouldn’t bother engaging them.
Ok I will literally write it out for you:
Switzerland has strict gun laws.
The countries around Switzerland are not filled with more guns than people.
Therefore, Switzerland does not have a gun violence problem.
Pro gun people have been making the same brainless arguments here for YEARS. We’ve seen it all.
You know, you’re right!
The lack of violence in Swiss society has everything to do with the availability of guns. It has nothing to do with a more or less homogenous society with centuries of shared culture and values in a traditionally isolated environment where people had to get along. If the Swiss had access to guns, they’d be slaughtering each other, no question. Imagine the carnage if nearly every home had a fully automatic machine gun assault rifle weapon of war and a supply of powerful ammunition specifically designed to kill human beings
Oh, wait . . . that’s exactly what it’s like.
But keep telling yourself it’s the guns.

Also there's compulsory military service for men in Switzerland. But that's not really the issue. The issue is mental health and social fabric (appalling in inexistent in this country). This country has been worshiping individualism, competition and violence to an extent from which we cannot come back.
The problem is lack of family and proper values. Apparently that’s supposed to be a virtue these days though, having a “village” raise your child, not a problem.
And yet, we don't have women and girls shooting up people because their fragile egos got hurt.
This is a male-only problem, where everyone else pays the price.

+2. This is the main problem (with others being the lack of mental health services in this country). But without easy access to guns, this would not happen like this.
Mental health services can't solve a cultural problem.
Please describe this cultural problem.
The American culture of bullying, hate, bias, and violence.
What are you smoking. This "culture" you describe is GLOBAL! Pervasive in every country, develope or not.
Ask anyone who hasn't grown up here. It's not.
I don't need to ask anyone! I know from experience! Italy, France, Germany, England for example have very serious issues with all the things you just listed. italy is a hotbed of violence especially against immigrants and women.

Sure, "Italian". Maybe time to visit again if you can't see the difference.

Anonymous wrote:Anonymous wrote:Anonymous wrote:Gun violence is about math. If an overwhelming majority of folks whether they are nuts or not have access to a weapon easy to use to kill, statistically, deaths are going to rise. I mean you can't really escape crime. But you put a gun in a criminals hands, people die. Put it in an unstable persons hands, people will die. Depressed person, will die. Etc, et al. It's simple math. If however you entrust a protocol by which all who have guns must abide by like mandatory training, safe storage, limits on use, it will help a great deal for numbers to fall. Ultimately however, it will still be high because statistically, it doesn't matter what the equation is, logically you will end up with a mathematical reality. It will be better than no adjustments but come on, if is what it is. There's no way going back to where we were. It's not just about the nuts having access.
“Gun violence.” Another catchy phrase. What about hammer violence; screwdriver violence; pipe violence; wrench violence; acid violence; gasoline violence; knife violence; sword violence; machete violence; crowbar violence; truck violence; car violence; insecticide violence; boiling water violence; hot grease violence; etc.; and my personal favorite, toilet tank cover violence?
Why don’t we hear about how all those other inanimate objects are constantly self-activating to do violence, but guns somehow have a mind, volition and locomotive capacity of their own.
Criminal violence is committed by criminals. Not inanimate objects.
You mean like in the UK, where your kitchen scissors are the moral equivalent of a machine gun nowadays?
Isn’t the inverse true? If guns were not specifically problematic in their lethality, we would be hearing more about criminals using knives, screwdrivers, and the like to kill people, but we don’t. Guns are the weapon of choice, which illustrates their problematic usage.

No, criminals and murderers are the problem, along with a media and social environment that is the functional equivalent of the operant conditioning that military uses to desensitize soldiers to killing.
All countries have criminals and murderers.
Our country is the only one that lets them easily obtain weapons of war.
“Weapons of war.” Catchy phrase. Completely inapposite. No military in the world uses semi-automatic weapons. None of these murderers is using artillery, mines, air dropped bombs, missiles, etc. I haven’t checked whether any of them might have used a fully automatic weapon, but I can’t think of one.
I know, dear.
It’s much easier to focus on semantics than argue that “ur freedums” justifies the deaths of thousands of people per year.
Actually, one of the several things that “justifies” private firearm ownership is the millions of times they are used each year to stop criminal assault, generally without a shot being fired. “Dear.”
What about those of us who don’t want guns on our streets for defensive OR offensive purposes? Why can’t we just live like the people in other countries with adequate regulations?
You see, that’s what “choice” is about. Self-defense is a natural right. You don’t get to choose how other people are able to protect themselves, or what recreational activities they engage in. They’re not “your” streets. They’re everybody’s streets, and gun owners are part of “everybody.”
As for “adequate” regulation, I’ll bet a quarter that you don’t have the first clue what gun laws already exist in the US generally or DC in particular.
“Gun control” has been touted since at least 1968 (and actually since at least 1934 when the National Firearms Act took effect) as the solution to every social ill. The fact that people like you are still complaining is incontrovertible evidence that restrict the rights of decent people doesn’t change the behavior of criminals. “Back in the day,” kids took guns, including actual military rifles, to school for sponsored marksmanship activities or after school recreation. Nobody shot up the schools. Why was that? What changed? There are millions of guns in the US. If a magic magnet somehow lifted them all away, they’d be replaced, at least for the criminal element, more or less immediately. Prohibition and confiscatory laws didn’t work for booze and they don’t work for drugs. What would make guns different. Criminals import literal tons of narcotics into the US. They can import guns too if there’s a market.
Gun laws are inherently racist in their origin and their application. They were instituted to keep freed slaves from arming themselves against depredation. Rich people have always had gun permits and armed private security. Poor people are left to the mercy of criminal sociopaths.
