We got an official answer from the teacher: Grinch and Frosty are out: they were too Christmassy - Grinch stole Christmas and poor Frosty... I am not sure what was wrong with the snowman, something about decorations. Instead of those 2 - we will listen to 2 patriotic songs on the 24th! I think the other songs passed the censorship.
That's really really obnoxious. Did someone actually complain or did the administration just decide this on their own?
Reminds me of the time our whole International Day Fair was canceled, after the teachers and students put tons of time into it, because the poster that went out to parents had some clipart of kids on it and the kids appeared to have "white features," and some parent complained and accused the principal of racism. The parent in question? Blond, blue-eyed, as white as you can get. And the people most negatively affected? All the non-white families who had been planning displays, dance routines, etc.
DP. What principal was so chicken he or she wouldn't simply say exactly what you said here? That the ones who would be most negatively affected by canceling would be all the non-white families planning to participate? Or was this a parent-organized or PTA-organized event and the PTA panicked and canceled? I really question the details, not because I question you personally PP--I really am not -- but because if it truly was just one, white parent, complaining about clipart on a poster when the entire event was already arranged -- it sounds like that might not be the whole story. Surely a group of (white, probably) parents complained instead of just one? Or did the one threaten to...post all over social media about it, or....? I just find it hard to believe that no one dared tell ONE parent, "That's a terrible oversight, we agree, and we'll issue new posters immediately. But no, we will not cancel an event that dozens of families from countries including X, Y and Z have put many hours into--just because of ill-chosen cartoon clip art." No one dared tell her that?! If it really went down the way it was described to you, PP, that one parent must have been a real pill, and/or the school administration or PTA must have been completely wimpy.
