Not anxious. I'm Catholic. We don't believe in The Rapture.
+1 Plus I've watched Evangelicals do this to themselves once a decade my whole life. I remember a classmate weeping about why wouldn't I just "be saved" so I could avoid burning in a lake of fire for all eternity when the Rapture was sure to come on . . . Y2K. The world is full of people with this dramatic, fatalistic worldview that thrives on the feeling of impending doom, and it's clear by the way they keep falling for it that it's something they don't care to learn from it.
As a fellow Catholic, I agree. I mostly grew up in Catholic or areligious circles but I will never forget when I started working for a southern Republican congressman in my 20s and his daughter kept asking me if I was saved. I literally felt like, “I guess time will tell, so I do not even understand the premise of your question. It is a big pet of the reason I am NOT encouraging my kids to go to school down South. There are so many odd (to Catholic) beliefs of old-school Protestants that just float around in everyday life but can be really jarring if you are not used to it or, even worse, attempt to scratch a little bit beneath the surface. Another example is this cooking show I watch and the Southern host keeps telling me to “Bless it,” ie bless the food after we make it. I kept wondering about why I have a problem with this and finally I realized, “We cannot bless anything. Only God can. Why is this host telling US to bless the food? We can THANK God for giving US the food?” Just a lot of theological differences in everyday life!
So interesting! Thanks for sharing this.
