The hardest hit areas literally weren’t even inside “the cone” 48 hours before the hurricane hit. So the people telling everyone to look at weather reports (or expecting DeSantis to evacuate his whole state???) are nuts. The hurricane was originally coming directly for Tampa or north of Tampa. It ended up hardly hitting Tampa. DeSantis repeatedly said that there was a lot more uncertainty for this one than is typical for hurricanes and that we all had to watch closely for any changes.
So why did he and county officials delay calling for evacuations, once the storm had started to shift? They were still downplaying the risks to human life and property even when the NHS had started showing more likelihood of landfall in those areas. This seems to have been a calculated decision - and now about 40 people (that we know of) are dead. This was a real, devastating failure of leadership. Peter Scorsch - the guy who broke the news about the Mar A Lago raid - has been making these points on Twitter, as well. He's right.
