They were inside the cone. Not in the center, but in the cone. Anyone living on the Florida Gulf Coast has to know that the interaction with Cuba was going to affect the path and the strength of a hurricane, so the track before Cuba is a midrange estimate of the probabilities. It went over Cuba without significantly weakening and then wobbled repeatedly while the eye reorganized and the hurricane got bigger and stronger. The wobbling was obvious on the radar images and all the hurricane and weather people were pointing it out. People in flood-prone places should have been preparing to evacuate and watching the strength and track. This was a big storm. Even if it went to Tampa it would have inundated Sanibel and Cape Coral. They were on the side where the strongest winds were pushing water into the bays, rivers, and canals.

The people blaming DeSantis for the failure of residents to use their common sense and evacuate are clearly partisan hacks. By all measures, DeSantis has done a great job given what information he had. He told people to evacuate. Not a lot of sympathy for anyone who chose to stay.

They don't have to leave. But go read all the accounts of people who say they weren't given sufficient warning about how bad this storm could be, where they live - and didn't have enough time to make a plan and get out. The evacuation order was issued 24 hours from when the storm hit instead of three days before, which is when the models started showing that Ian could hit this area.

The local officials didn't follow the plan they had in place. And little Ron DeSantis didn't encourage people in this area to leave, either, until it was too late. They failed. People died. You can be as angry about COVID as you want but NO ONE wants to die in a hurricane like this. Some people still may not leave - but more people would have.

I did NOT have to evacuate because we bought in a part of the state that is up a little ridge. We don't flood in my neighborhood - at least not yet. But much of the rest of my city was evacuated. Evacuation orders were issued well before the storm hit, where I live. We also got notice that evacuation orders would be coming, so people had lots of time to prepare and make plans, and get out.

It was still very scary, and there was still lots of uncertainty - and plenty of people evacuated who could have safely stayed home, it turns out, because the hurricane hit land south of us instead of hitting us directly. But no one drowned in their own house where I live, just a little north of where incompetent government officials should be pilloried for what they did.

Some folks that did evacuate as soon as the order was given were dodging tornadoes on their way to safety. 24 hours before a storm is not enough time to evacuate.

So why did he and county officials delay calling for evacuations, once the storm had started to shift? They were still downplaying the risks to human life and property even when the NHS had started showing more likelihood of landfall in those areas. This seems to have been a calculated decision - and now about 40 people (that we know of) are dead.

This was a real, devastating failure of leadership.

Peter Scorsch - the guy who broke the news about the Mar A Lago raid - has been making these points on Twitter, as well. He's right.

The areas hardest hit are R so the state will make voting infrastructure a priority. If it was Miami, not so much.
