We are looking at basis for the fall, but these threads have us nervous. How does basis handle non perfect children? Our DS has ADHD and we are in elementary still. DS is very bright and does well academically, but can be impulsive and inflexible . Our neighbors said a number of elementary teachers have left this spring. Our other option is a small Catholic (or public). We didn’t get into the other privates to which we applied.
Public is your best option.
Agreed. Public schools have much more to offer for students with ADHD and are required to provide services and supports for these students for free. Private schools have no such requirement or expectation. When thinking about an ideal elementary school environment, your child sounds like he/she would benefit from a typical elementary program where students have a 'home base' and a classroom they spend the day in, are used to the environment, have a dedicated space for their things, etc. At BASIS, the elementary students have no classroom and move around throughout the gigantic building all day. That kind of routine (or lack there of) sounds like it might be pretty tough for your child. Also, I can't speak for other private schools, but at BASIS, if your child is deemed not a good fit, you will have to leave mid-school year and will still be expected/legally required to pay for the entire year of tuition.
