It's a question to be pondered from a psychological perspective. I didn't read any links. Maybe it was addressed. She was a teenager in some sort of uber strict Evangelical school in UP Michigan. The Chatfield family ran the school. Needless to say, she was basically groomed as a child. She then went on to marry into the family, as often happens with teenage women in very conservative religious cultures. I'm not sure she even knew she had other options. Her parents probably heavily pressured her into the marriage. I am from MI and follow politics there. This is one of the times where the parents didn't pressure. The mother and step father relocated to move away from the church, but the daughter, who was in HS at the time, did not want to go. Which kid in HS wants to move - coupled with being groomed - so sad.
The mother (who had been a member of the Chatfield church) trusted the Chatfields and the daughter did not want to be with the alcoholic father.
In the interview she stated her mom wanted her to move to neighboring Harbor Springs (with new husband) and attend public high school. The Chatfields manipulated her to defy her mom and choose to stay and live with the Chatfields, thus become isolated, trapped and dependent on them. And later, the parents were AGAINST rushing into marriage at age 19 and didn't trust the Chatfield family. And what's most ironic is I believe Lee's now wife, who was also his high school girlfriend, attended a public high school right next to Harbor Springs. So spare me that this family thought public high schools were wicked -- no, it sounds like they (especially Lee, her creeper teacher!) simply wanted to control this girl and separate her from her parents.
