I'm just theorizing, but if the movies, articles, and books I've read tell me anything about politics, when you want to run for high office, the party apparatus hires private investigators and asks you to spill all of your dirt?

I think the July 2021 end to this "affair" is curious timing vis a vis 2022's gubernatorial election. I wonder if either PIs discovered the affair and/or he came clean to them and they had him cease all contact with her in preparation to run for the Republican ticket. Victim or not, she flipped out at the abrupt cut-off and zero closure.

Similar scandal happened at conservative Hillsdale College in Michigan back in the 90s. The president of the college was having a long-running affair with his daughter in law. The president ended it to marry another woman. The daughter in law flipped out, later revealed the affair to the entire family, then walked outside and shot herself. Made the Times and Post:

He appears to live a family modest lifestyle in the "up state" boonies where he and his family resided. The address I see attached to him, at least a couple of years ago, is nothing special. There are a lot of lakes, so in the summers you drink and party on ski boats.

It's when he was "down state" in Lansing and Detroit, 4 to 5 hours away from his wife and kids, where he had a taste for the finer things in life and his affairs. There just are not thousands of cute interns from all the Big Ten state schools and pretty, polished, (and elbowy) 20-something PR and lobbyist women running around "up state". And there's really nowhere to party lavishly up there.

He did most of his dirt down state.

On 10 acres. This would be a $2+ million property here, if you could even find it.

I don't want to derail this thread, but that property looks like it's out in the sticks, and this guy seemed to have a taste for luxury. That part of Michigan has a pretty big divide between affluent and poor. Outside of cities/towns like Petoskey or Traverse City where there is a lot of affluence, it's miles and miles of woods and fields, dotted by modest to shabby single homes sitting alone on several acres. There is a lot of natural beauty and a lot of isolation. You simply can't compare it to here.

Chatfield's wife is very likely powerless too. She knows how much power and money the patriarch father (Rusty) and husband (Lee) control. I'm sure she's already been threatened with loss of access to her children, if she decides to leave him.

This is such a dark story. Hopefully people in that church community speak with their feet and leave it behind.

Chatfield's wife also works as a teacher and her father-in-law is her boss (Chatfield's father). The pastor father is defending his son. So it looks like a rock and a hard place for her.

The wife is standing by his side, even as his statement via his lawyers disclosed multiple affairs, plural. Even if his wife think SIL's lying about the underage sex (illegal for a teacher, Lee, to have any sexual contact with a student under age 18), his wife is okay with Lee sleeping with his sister in law for years and also carrying on countless other affairs? Insane.

Josh Duggar’s wife stood by him, too. They’re taught not to know how to do anything else.

“10 acres 10 minutes from downtown”

Tragic. Why did she marry his brother? THIS is not victim shaming, blaming or otherwise. It's a question to be pondered from a psychological perspective.

I didn't read any links. Maybe it was addressed.

She was a teenager in some sort of uber strict Evangelical school in UP Michigan. The Chatfield family ran the school. Needless to say, she was basically groomed as a child. She then went on to marry into the family, as often happens with teenage women in very conservative religious cultures. I'm not sure she even knew she had other options. Her parents probably heavily pressured her into the marriage.

I am from MI and follow politics there. This is one of the times where the parents didn't pressure. The mother and step father relocated to move away from the church, but the daughter, who was in HS at the time, did not want to go. Which kid in HS wants to move - coupled with being groomed - so sad.

The mother (who had been a member of the Chatfield church) trusted the Chatfields and the daughter did not want to be with the alcoholic father.

In the interview she stated her mom wanted her to move to neighboring Harbor Springs (with new husband) and attend public high school. The Chatfields manipulated her to defy her mom and choose to stay and live with the Chatfields, thus become isolated, trapped and dependent on them. And later, the parents were AGAINST rushing into marriage at age 19 and didn't trust the Chatfield family.

And what's most ironic is I believe Lee's now wife, who was also his high school girlfriend, attended a public high school right next to Harbor Springs. So spare me that this family thought public high schools were wicked -- no, it sounds like they (especially Lee, her creeper teacher!) simply wanted to control this girl and separate her from her parents.

I’m sure it will be something like “she tempted him” or she wasn’t god fearing or some other bullsht to ignore his rapist son. It’s never the male’s fault.

Patriarchy and misogyny are the common threads among all extremist/fundamentalist religions. You will not see women with any power or real respect (beyond the lip service paid to child rearing) in extremist Christian, Mormon, Muslim, Jewish, Amish, etc., religions. You can see it in the way the GOP is governing via activist judges. It’s all dedicated to keeping women in their place.
