Likely the camera was positioned directly at the end of the barrel of the gun. Alec would need to point the gun so they can position camera, take light readings, etc. They may have been rehearsing the scene, and told him to fire the blank so they could fine tune camera & light settings.

For every image like this, you have a camera & probably 5-6 people with the gun aimed at them:

Firing a blank directly at a camera would only damage the camera.  There's no way it would go through the camera and then kill a person.

Look at the image I posted of Pacino in Heat - he is aiming slightly away from the camera lens.

Guess where the cinematographer is positioned? Just to the side of the camera or immediately behind. Plus 4-5 other people surrounding the DP, including the director:

It looks like this was an indoor scene, inside the church. Firearms shooting blanks will emit light, so they were likely rehearsing the scene so they could fine tune camera and light settings to properly record the action inside the dark church. They probably need to have him fire the gun multiple times to get the settings correct.
