Firing a blank directly at a camera would only damage the camera. There's no way it would go through the camera and then kill a person.

Again, a blank would need to be fired directly at a person at close range to kill.



Look at the image I posted of Pacino in Heat - he is aiming slightly away from the camera lens.

Guess where the cinematographer is positioned? Just to the side of the camera or immediately behind. Plus 4-5 other people surrounding the DP, including the director:









It looks like this was an indoor scene, inside the church. Firearms shooting blanks will emit light, so they were likely rehearsing the scene so they could fine tune camera and light settings to properly record the action inside the dark church. They probably need to have him fire the gun multiple times to get the settings correct.

If you want to use a live round, go use a firearm that isn't a prop in the film industry.


As someone that has guns, empty firearms are never to be pointed at anyone. If they were shooting a scene where the gun, even with a blank was pointed where someone would be, roll the film, remove the people and then shoot. This was 100% avoidable without compromising the film quality.

This is good information. As someone who has no idea how movies are shot now I can understand how this happened. What a terrible tragedy.

If it is indeed a faulty blank, then responsibility would go back to the manufacturer of the blank. There's no way an actor or prop master would be able to tell, even if they followed the safety protocols. You're trusting that the blank was properly manufacturers.

But then why wasn't a camera man injured?


The cinematographer was killed. Perhaps hhe was behind camera with Director standing nearby?
