Let me try to explain. I don’t think universities and colleges should give out scholarships for athletics. Period. I think an institute of higher learning should focus on academics and research and not sports. I think colleges can have volunteer sports activities where they are self funding (revenue pays for expenses, including facilities, equipment, coaching and travel) and any revenue left over is shared with players. Similar to high school. They can get sponsors and do fund raisers too and even have alumni donations, but no school based revenue (tuition, fees, grants, etc.) goes into those programs and no scholarships. While I get that sports creates a nice brand for universities, that’s not what universities should be competing on. They are supposed to be there to teach young adults and get them ready for the real world. That’s not what they’ve become and this over emphasis on college athletics, sports, etc. is not helping.
If your kid is that good they get picked up by a pro or semi pro team, or they play club or college ball for free, or they play for fun. No more free rides because a kid can kick, shoot, hit, dunk, catch, tackle, swim, run fast, etc.

So what you’re saying is that it’s NOT likely a 100 percent “Athletic” scholarship, correct?
So something like a 80/20 split…with the 20 percent being athletic money to be determined at a much later date, correct.
So you’re disputing its a 100 percent Athletic scholarship.
Trying to help you along…..lol.

You don’t think and women’s soccer players deserve full rides? Wow, the misogyny lives on in DCurban moms. You are a terrible human being.
I don’t think men’s soccer players deserve full rides either, but nice assumption moron.
You do realize how this works, right? Not all verbal soccer commitments get full rides, right? Actually, it is very rare. Football and basketball are head count sports All of those players on scholarship get full rides. You aren’t against women in sports but you just don’t think the most talented should be rewarded. Just trying to follow.

I get it. It’s a good utopian sentiment. People should be paid based on their value to society. Teachers, police officers, bus drivers should make more money than tik tok influencers, movie stars, and tennis players. People should be hired based on merit not who they know. College should be tuition free for anyone who wants it not just athletes and really smart kids. Good looking people shouldn’t get all the dates. Sounds like a nice, fair way of life. I wish it worked this way. But, as I explain to my 14 year old who hates unequal treatment for anything, the world isn’t that way right now. But one can dream.

I also think it is okay to share these big accomplishments on DCUM. I mean, isn't this the type of thing we would all want for our kids?? Go Northern VA! Great school, great player.
It’s a great accomplishment, but I don’t know why we’re supposed to be happier for her than for any of the other kids all over the country who will commit to UVA and other top schools. Am I missing something that makes her story special?
No one suggested you should be happier for this kid than others who will commit to UVA and other top schools. Where are you getting that? We should be just as happy for all of them.
PS just because you say you happy for someone, it doesn't mean your are NOT happy for the others. ie saying black lives matter doesn't mean other lives don't matter. saying I like Florida beaches doesn't mean I don't like Hawaii beaches. I can't believe this stuff needs to be said outside of 4 year olds

So the reach kid whose parents sent him/her to Khan academy should get the upper hand? Lol…beat it
