I don’t think her acknowledgment of privilege goes far enough and that’s why people are dissatisfied by it. There are multiple layers of privilege in this story, and while everyone of course wishes her a full and speedy recovery, it does not seem like her portion of whatever work she is doing needed to be happening right now. She comes off as entitled, rich, privileged, and clueless. I love wildlife and I think it is great that she wants to bring attention to the plight of the bonobo. It’s just a lot to ask me to rationalize when I think about all of the sacrifices regular people are making due to the pandemic and she bops around from speaking roles at the Women’s March to Congolese forests like a ball in a pinball machine of privilege. Her injury sounds harrowing and I wouldn’t wish it on her, but this whole episode has demonstrated to me that she has some work to do on herself. +1000 to the person who said they hope she donates handsomely to benefit Congolese hospitals and schools. And finally, I, too am curious about who her life partner is.
I hear you, and the role of her privilege here is complicated and I find her hard to know and place, I cannot gage how self aware and mature/insightful she is in regard to her privilege. She's smart, educated, and outspoken but leans histrionic too so it is hard to know the degree to which her motivations to be there at all during a pandemic are coming from commitment, emotional/psychological issues or a combo of all of it . Maybe that is not even discernable but that's what I am curious about, not that it is any of my business and God knows, many flawed men are out there pushing their causes, leaning on their entitlements and no one bats an eye. So I am reluctant to dissect her and obviously what happened to her is horrible and I wish her well. I posted earlier that her trauma background is severe. I have the thought that she takes excessive risks and goes toward things and situations she fears, minimizing or downplaying her vulnerability. She was modeling in Japan at 15 when she was sexuly assaulted and I get the sense that she is a headstrong person who needs to prove something to herself or the world, what exactly I am not sure. That really saddens me. (And also intersects with her privilege. She has the means to actually act on it it). I hope she recovers well. And is able to pay it forward to the many people who risked their lives to save her.
