A kid from Mineral, Virginia with those stats would get accepted... It's super hard for Arlington, Fairfax and Loudoun County kids to get into UVA EA
Oh stop. This trope is so old.
It's not a trope, it's the way it is. Was just talking with a friend who lives in Manassas whose child and classmate got into UVa today with a much weaker profile than my Arlington kid who got declined. You are judged against your individual school. And, while UVa will swear they don't have quotas they take the same number of kids from our school every year. It's fine. They have to do that or too much of the school would be from NoVA. They should just be honest with people, lots don't understand how it works. We knew the deal going in but DD still wanted to see.
Besides TJ, what is the approximate maximum number of students UVA would take from a large high school in FCPS? I think 25-40? Maybe 50? I know that Dean J says there are no quotas for schools. I think kids think they have a good chance at UVA when they are in the top 10% of their high school, but the tippy top kids get in everywhere and some of the others face disappointment.
My kids are at W-L. Naviance shows that UVA has taken 49-51 kids every year no matter how many apply. There's clearly a quota of about 50. I don't understand why they aren't just honest about it, it's not hard to find the data. W-L might be higher than other APS schools because it has the magnet IB program.
How do you know your kid's profile is stronger than your friends' without knowing, essay, course selections, detailed EC, recommendations, URM etc... I always wondered people ignore everything else and just compare the GPA number and SAT scores. Also, if about 50 kids get into UVA from one high school, you shouldn't complain about hard to get into UVA. While other schools send 1-10 kids to UVA. 2019-2020, 3555 applied and 1291 accepted from Fairfax county alone. 36.3% accepted rate. Of course, rural kids applied less and accepted fewer kids. Are you trying to say NOVA kids are much more comparative? Not so much. Every school has top kids with high grit, intelligence, and diligence. Those kids did best as much as NOVA kids in their given resources. I guess technically it shouldn't say there is a quota. Each year, students' profiles could be changed from a school, and that gives the flexibility of changing accepted numbers.
