It's not a trope, it's the way it is. Was just talking with a friend who lives in Manassas whose child and classmate got into UVa today with a much weaker profile than my Arlington kid who got declined. You are judged against your individual school. And, while UVa will swear they don't have quotas they take the same number of kids from our school every year. It's fine. They have to do that or too much of the school would be from NoVA. They should just be honest with people, lots don't understand how it works. We knew the deal going in but DD still wanted to see.
Besides TJ, what is the approximate maximum number of students UVA would take from a large high school in FCPS? I think 25-40? Maybe 50? I know that Dean J says there are no quotas for schools. I think kids think they have a good chance at UVA when they are in the top 10% of their high school, but the tippy top kids get in everywhere and some of the others face disappointment.
My kids are at W-L. Naviance shows that UVA has taken 49-51 kids every year no matter how many apply. There's clearly a quota of about 50. I don't understand why they aren't just honest about it, it's not hard to find the data. W-L might be higher than other APS schools because it has the magnet IB program.

This is an old article but I found it interesting.

With regard to a typical NoVA public school, our mid sized LCPS graduates a class of approximately 400 each year, and according to Naviance, UVA accepts 15-17 each year out of about 65-70+ applicants. Of that, about 10 will attend. Heard directly from our school counselor's mouth, "UVA likes the to 5%" so if you're in there, you're golden. My twins were top 2% and top 6%. They are, at least at our school, VERY focused on GPA over test scores (though I know Dean J will protest - it's true at our school). I know tons of kids who had better much scores than mine (in pre-COVID years), whose GPA was under 4.25 and did not get in. For some frame of reference, my UVA accepted kids GPAs are 4.43 and 4.6. As of right now, Naviance updated this morning to show 5 accepted out of a class of 404, two are my kids and the only ones who got in ED so that would mean that only 3 additional got in through EA, which is crazy as we had 76 applications this year. I can't imagine that is true, but it updated overnight and it's clearly not ED people because they would show as enrolled and they are not.
For comparison, over 100 kids applied to Tech this year, usually about 60+ get in and 30+ attend. W&M does not draw quite as strongly for some reason from our HS, kinda seen as not a a "fun" school and the lack of really competitive sports seems to deter alot. If you look the Naviance graph for W&M, it's a sea of Blue (waitlist for the uninitiated). My kid was going to apply but knew he had to do ED to have the best chance of getting in. We only send a handful of kids to W&M every year, literally like 3 or 4.
FWIW, that’s a high school student opinion piece seven years old.

Virginia is blessed with several very high-quality public schools, each are actually very different from the other in vibe and in that way it serves our state really well. We’re very lucky to have all the great schools we have in Virginia.
PP here and I agree with you. It just seems crazy that any state university would require stats like these.
Well, that’s where the Cal, UCLA, Michigan, Virginia factor comes in.

It isn’t “blessed.” It invested in them.

Anonymous wrote:But HOW would they do that? Again, they accept ED before the RD deadline AND kids withdraw.

Which makes it so strange that UVA continues to insist there's no quotas by school.
They can insist until they are blue in the face, but I am quite sure they do unofficially. When my kids were accepted ED, they met a bunch of kids in the accepted students social media. My son told me about a kid he was talking to from the Richmond area. They had 10 kids apply ED and ALL of them got in. Really? That would NEVER happen up here in NoVA.

How do they admit the same number when the applications are split up between ED, EA, and RD?
ED gets acceptance before the RD deadline.
They also don’t know who is going to withdraw because of getting in ED elsewhere.
I just don’t think it’s logistically possible to hit the same number of admissions from one school when there are three deadlines and ED at others schools as a factor. And how is anyone so certain that the same numbers gets in every year? Have you been tracking this for years?
I can see the last five years in Naviance. Applied/Accepted/Admitted. It's easy to find. Other VA schools don't have the consistent number so don't seem to have the firm quota that UVA does.
I can see the past 10 years in my Naviance... not hard to gather the information.
