He is still correct and any person in a position of leadership including POTUS, Gov, Mator. The entire point of the lockdown was to control the spread so that we can get the economy back up. Now that we ae more than a month end, there is real damage to the economy and going much past May 1st is not going to happen, even in NYC. Now what that means for soccer is another issue but sports are part of the economy. Youth sports will get back up and running at some point this summer.
If kids can be in school, they can certainly play outside. Whether you want to take any risk is up to you. But it seems a little nutty to think kids will go to school, but schools won’t let them play at recess. Why would youth sports be on hold while classes continue? I don’t care about youth sports but I actually do care about people having a reasoned, well-defined view of relative risks and costs. Or understanding that nobody is saying that youth sports is essential. It’s not, and that is why it is shut down now. If lockdown lifts, there are a variety of nonessential activities that will be available, even if they aren’t to your household.
Step one is get schools to open. Sorry, but they are preparing to deliver distance Ed in the fall. Doesn’t mean they won’t be open but if you think that by June life is gonna return to what it was in January you are naive. Just relax, hope for the best but plan for a longer shut down. Without a vaccine we are realistically looking at cyclical and phased openings and shut downs. What we won’t know upon reopening is the kickback of a second wave.
Everybody knows things wont be normal. But we're not going to put life on hold and cannot afford to destroy people's lives and the economy while doing nothing to eliminate the virus. YOU need to relax and get your head around THAT.
With the high probability of second wave shutdowns people will be risk averse to put money down AGAIN on any youth sport that may very well end up being spent on Zoom. While gyms may open and schools may open people may not have the discretionary income for youth sports until things are more normal. While the economy will open youth sports are not integral to the economy. Sending kids to school without a real choice not to is different than expanding the risk to youth sports that may require hotel stays and other unnecessary travel.
