I thought it was because they had a lot of money but not enough to gain admission through a donation. Schools can't give everyone with 500k admission, right?  That's a lot of money, but we will have half of that saved and could theoretically pay tuition out of pocket. We are top 5% but not super loaded.  Not that I would donate to get my kid into school, but I imagine plenty of people would, if they only needed 0.5 million. [/quote]

500k isn't enough for USC much less the elite schools. The Bloombergs donated entire buildings. As did Kushner's dad.

I wouldn't want to waste half a million on a kid who get in on their own merits anyway. What you going to do when the flunk out freshman year - ask for your donation back?
