Also, all y'all knockin'g the South again forget how it is the birthplace of much of American musical tradition - bluegrass, jazz, blues, rock n roll were all born out of the American South. That music is among America's greatest gifts to the world. What has Yankeedom fostered? What one great cultural contribution know worldwide comes from your part of the country?
Duke Ellington was born in D.C. and Count Basie in NJ and their skills honed (with many others) north of the Mason Dixon. And the south lost many of the greats who migrated north who were limited to playing in dives and honky tons due to racism. Gigs in the south at night was dangerous business if you happened in the wrong area. So while I agree much talent came out of the South, much of the non-white talent landed elsewhere where advantages were safer.
