The ignorance in this thread is astounding. That hasn't been the Ole Miss flag in many years. I'm the poster from many pages back whose son was about to graduate from Ole Miss. Here is the update - He graduated in the spring. He received a job offer before he even graduated. He now lives in Charleston. His starting salary was 92,000. Not bad for a brand new college grad. Oh, and no student debt. He went to Ole Miss on a full merit scholarship.

How many times do we read on dcum about kids in the DC area who just can't find jobs? How hard it is for new grads to find work these days? Kids buried in student loan debt? Kids living with Mom and Dad because they can't afford to move out? We have three college grads. Our oldest went to Ole Miss. Our second went to Colorado. Our third went to Florida. Our fourth is in school at Ole Miss. Other than helping out with living expenses, college has cost us nothing.

It's great if your kids want to go to an expensive Ivy. Pretty sure my National Merit Scholar could have gotten into any school she chose. She chose a full ride at University of Florida. Ivys and expensive schools great, but state schools can offer a oath to success as well.

According to this site, the average high school GPA for an Ole Miss freshman is about a 3.5 and the average SAT is around 1170.

So, it's not difficult by DCUM standards, but you have to have decent grades.

Also, acceptance rates tell you very little about a school's selectivity. I wish people would stop quoting them as if they meant something. Yoi have to look at the GPA and test scores of accepted students.

I am a NP for this topic and find that there is a lot of misinformation being posted. The South still has a lot of racism true, but it is obvious that America is still very racist (i.e. Trump is now our president).

I was very fortunate to be in a small program. I knew all my classmates and I knew all my professors. I attended all my classes and was a very dedicated student. At the same time I had a friend at UF whose classes were almost all streaming because there wasn't room for all the students signed up for the class to actually attend the class. I have lived with a chronic disease since I was a child and when I missed a final because of it (probably the only class that I missed that semester) I called the professor and was able to schedule a make-up. She knew that something serious had happened because she actually knew me, which was a great thing about Ole Miss.

To finish with a little school spirit... Hotty Toddy!
BTW I am about as nerdy as it comes I attended about 3 games in my whole time there.

Duke Ellington was born in D.C. and Count Basie in NJ and their skills honed (with many others) north of the Mason Dixon. And the south lost many of the greats who migrated north who were limited to playing in dives and honky tons due to racism. Gigs in the south at night was dangerous business if you happened in the wrong area.

So while I agree much talent came out of the South, much of the non-white talent landed elsewhere where advantages were safer.

There are people on here every single day trying to parse prestige levels of "lower ivies" vs other top 20 schools. My daughter went to high school with the crazed/depressed children of these people, and it's part of why she didn't want to apply to schools in the NE.

Most recent data is that 81% of all applicants are accepted. Meaning it is NOT hard at all to get into.

Also, all y'all knockin'g the South again forget how it is the birthplace of much of American musical tradition - bluegrass, jazz, blues, rock n roll were all born out of the American South. That music is among America's greatest gifts to the world. What has Yankeedom fostered? What one great cultural contribution know worldwide comes from your part of the country?
