I'm sure your kids' experiences were fine, and the school works for your kids, but not all kids have great experiences there. It is a pressure cooker, and not all kids and parents want that.

I've taught at both Wootton and QO. Both are fine. Teaching will be the same. A bit more economic diversity and more low achievers at QO but the solid student types find each other. Wootton had more pressure cooker parents. College outplacement was the same when comparing similar kids.

Wootton's high school football coach was having weird conferences with his 'preferred' recruited players - i.e.: things like marijuana as a reward?
Recruited athletes rent houses in boundary and play for that team - pretty ridiculous for high school sports.

Only thing more absurd is they fired that coach and he went to the tiny 'always broke' Avalon school, which somehow found scholarships for those athletes (hmmm - my guess is they sucked the funds out of their sister school, Brookewood. The girls don't need a music, science or art program- nahhhhh! Just take them on nature walks - done!).

No the friend has some issues that Montgomery County schools are usually really good at dealing with but it seems like Wootoon was more concerned with test scores and reputation than helping kids that need a little extra assistance. My friend certainly isn’t the only one I’ve heard this from either. Perhaps you’re fortunate enough to not have to deal with these situations.

Yes. It is a fictional number. That is the point. Kids are competitive and they don't care if it is true they are brats about it. They are that bratty kid you went to school with that always asked you what you got on the test, what your SAT score was, did you pass the AP test, etc. Then they are HAPPY if you didn't because that just makes them feel a little better about themselves.

All those kids that reminded the teacher that he forgot to assign homework on the weekend all together in one place. I know sounds like fun. (Not everybody but that is the general vibe.)

At Wootton: Hey what did you get on the AP Calculus test? Oh a B (smile). Oh sorry I hope you don't get grounded. (smile)
At QO: Hey what did you get on the AP Calculus test? (this is in theory because most likely your friends at QO just don't care) Oh a B (smile). Nice job. (smile)

I think most kids can rise above that bratty kid but if you have a kid that you don't think will rise above you should know. Wootton is a great school with a character flaw, just like most schools in Montgomery County (or the world).

QO's character flaw is they have athletic kids and poor kids. So you figure out if you can deal with that.


This is not a flaw.

QO kids are great kids. The higher averages you see are because The Wooton population has more monied families.
