Let's begin with the fact that I am an animal owner and lover. This conversation is about respect of other peoples property, as well as owner discipline and control over their animal. We walk our dog multiple times a day. He does not walk on, or do his business on anybody's property. This is all about training. It is not a dog's fault, if he is allowed to pee on everything he smells. We see the affects in our own yard and the damage urine will do to grass, fencing, etc. This is not only about smell, but also about destruction. Mail boxes and the like can be destroyed by the acidity in urine. With a little training, your precious pooch will urinate where he is directed. A dog WANTS guidelines by their owner. Please stop and think that most people do not hate the animal, they just want to keep their property clean and in nice condition. A little consideration for our neighbors goes a long way.
I'm so glad someone pointed out the destructive properties of dog urine. I'm also pro-responsible dog ownership... I had a dog for nearly 11 years that recently passed. I found this thread while searching for my own solutions. The bottom of our mailbox post was destroyed by neighborhood dogs repeatedly marking/peeing on it. I replaced the mailbox and post late last summer, but fast forward 8 months, and discoloration and damage to the bottom 6-8 inches or so of our wooden mailbox post is already noticeable. Thanks for the suggestions by the earliest posters. I am not angry about the dogs that are walked daily down the sidewalk in our neighborhood, but I am looking for ways to deter them from marking, and this, destroying, my mailbox.
