Putin is hosed. He's backed himself into an unwinnable situation. Too bad for the Russian people.
How so? Europe and the US are not going to lift a finger to save Ukraine. Sanctions aren't going to do much. OPEC has more loyalty to its own members than outsiders, and Saudi Arabia won't budge on oil, which means Europe has a gas problem, since it gets its gas from Russia. China is in Russia's corner purely to act as counterweight against the West, which it wants to destabilize, on its way to becoming the world's next superpower. Yes, it's an unwinnable situation for Ukraine and the West. If you have opposing views backed by logical arguments, I'd be happy to be proved wrong.
I wonder where we would be today if the West had never made overtures to Ukraine and Georgia with respect to joining NATO. Perhaps the temperature in the room would be a bit lower, and we would have a greater level of trust between the U.S. and Russia. I think this is the root of the problem: the U.S. doesn't trust Russia, and they don't trust us, and each side has valid reasons for their opinion of the other.
Russia is, right now, proving why neither the US nor anyone else shouldn't trust them. The temperature in the room would be a lot lower if Russia minded its own business, focused on its own internal problems, and treated its neighbors as the sovereign nations that they are instead of telling lies about them, trying to invade them and take them over. Sorry but there is absolutely no defending Russia on this.
