Ex ANCer here, one of the early birds with several other once foundational families that were critical in joining with the Hatmakers and Pruets to launch ANC. The thing to keep in mind is that a lot of people felt very betrayed by the Hatmakers (and the Pruets) when it became really evident that Jen was all about Jen and that her dreams of stardom and fame were consuming the oxygen of that little church. People really did buy into the mission of the original church, a Christian church preaching a living Gospel to those in the margins of a city we all loved. We were duped. All of us.
I am curious- where was Brandon in all this when Jen's career was taking off? Was he still preaching regularly and holding down the fort while she was speaking on the road? In the podcast interview with Jamie and Kristen, they were describing Jen as someone who had to shine a spotlight on Brandon when they were all together. It was in his or one of Jen's books where he describes having a very vivid spiritual experience himself, a vision of serving the poor in Austin. That very day he gave away a pair of new, expensive cowboy boots to a needy guy in response to the vision (which took place at a church where Shane Claiborne was a guest speaker)
