There was some talk that VYS wouldn't participate and would try to do something else with some other clubs. But then we heard we were going to Herndon anyway. Maybe that was just in older age groups, and they've managed to do something else for younger groups?

I understand the reluctance to play -- some of the teams in that tournament are pretty deft with elbows, forearms and kicks, and the refs do absolutely nothing to stop it. It's true in the FPYC tournament, too -- I coached a team that was playing well early in a game and was tied 2-2 until they (NVSC, a repeat offender) just fouled the crap out of our best player and a few others, leaving me with a bunch of guys with ice packs on the sideline. I don't know what that was, but it sure as hell wasn't soccer.[/quote]

That said, I think the All-Star tournaments are a net positive. They're especially great for U8s, where most of the players will go to travel the next year. And the kids quickly forget the results and the injuries.

I don't like the idea of VYS isolating itself in recreational play. They've pulled out of SFL, though their oldest girls teams still play in a high school league with a couple of other clubs. It's fun to see different faces and different styles of play, at least every once in a while. I don't think they're playing in any U8 crossover league, which was flawed but still a beneficial experience that could've been even better with a few tweaks.[/quote]
