Gendry is illegitimate too, and putting him on the throne would not help Cersei. Also, she'd never accept Tyrion as king, because she has zippy influence over him. The only ways for Cersei to "succeed" would be to regain influence with Tommen and maintain his position as king, or win a showdown in Kings Landing and rule it with Jaime as King and Queen. Hey, the Targaryans were accepted with their incestuous marriages, why not some Lannisters? Frankly, Jaime looks tired of fighting. Maybe he'd be satisfied with going home to Casterly Rock.
He is actually of royal blood though. Tommen is not. He has no Baratheon in him so he's got less of a claim than Gendry. The royal line continues with the King no the queen, the only royal blood is Baratheon blood. Which is why R+L = J is such a big deal. Other than the whole, 'possession is nine tenths of the law' thing of course, which Tommen has going for him. Tyrion has literally NO claim. He was never a royal and isn't even a descendant of a queen. Gendry is someone who is literally no one, she would be handing him power, and he'd then be indebted to her. Personally I'd take a nobody who's indebted to me over my cult following son who's just hung me out to dry.
What I'm saying is that like Robert Baratheon, Cersei might be thinking she/Jaime could raise army and forcibly take Kings Landing (oust the religious zealots), and crown themselves king and queen.
If there's one thing Cersei won't do its harm her children. I don't think she and Jaime will ever move against Tommen. At least not in a way where he could be put in physical danger.
True. I think she'll move to support Tommen first, but will move to put herself on the throne with Jaime, if Tommen dies.
