The HC industry is holding this country hostage.  We spend 17% of GDP on HC.  The next closest countries, Germany and the UK spend 10% to 11%.

Most other countries spend 6% to 7%.  Why are we an outlier?  There's practically no competition here.  Just govt writing checks to pharma, hospitals and medical establishments.  And people paying hefty friggin' premiums.

You are likely living off smth government sponsored too.  Don't delude yourself.  Top employers in the USA are HEALTHCARE AND EDUCATION. Think about it for a minute.  How does this happen that in 38 states (including high GDP states like NY, CA) Healthcare is a number 1 employer?  Why do you think this is? It's because healthcare is a beneficiary of government spending.  Some facilities or hospitals only exist and employ people because we have Medicare/Medicaid.  Same with education that's beneficiary of student loans and foreign students.   Private industry has been outsourcing (in-shore and offshore) for decades now, with government subsidizing wages for American workers.  If you are a small business owner your customers only survive and patronize you because their jobs are subsidized.  It's a house of cards. [/quote]

We need to start unscrewing it, not simply let it fall, because you won't survive this.

Universal Medicare system (at least for catastrophic coverage) for all would be great as working age people consume a lot less in terms of healthcare resources than elderly but pay disproportionately higher costs to just have catastrophic coverage plans (most of these high deductible plans are pretty much out of pocket care for reasonably healthy people).  This would also decouple health insurance from the requirement for full time salaried employment, which isn't any longer ideal for the economic growth, solving unemployment issues, increasing tax base and workforce participation by those unable to work full time and/or afraid to lose their benefits and living off subsidies.

But the first step is to focus on reducing fraud and making sure profits of the middlemen don't take the front seat in this system, which is an essential basic every human needs and people are forced to pay for or risk much more severe repercussions. We are all held hostage to this[/quote]
