If it's the loss of spatial awareness, then it sounds like more of a neurological issue, not a mental health one.
NP - It could well be either I think. I experienced that dizzying disorientation mid-air during practices several times in a sport in which I was competing internationally (though not Olympic level). It leaves you shaken - mentally, physically - and doubting your ability a bit, since if you don’t know how to orient your body in the air, you can’t complete these complex flips and twists. And like previous posters have said, that can lead to bodily harm given the level of difficulty at which these gymnasts operate. It’s a pretty sickening feeling to be flying through the air high up, unsure which way you’re going or how you’ll land. Getting that disoriented can definitely happen in my experience from being really nervous (like trying a difficult new skill you’re unfamiliar with) or mentally off your game. All that to say - whether it’s mental health or neurological, in either case I absolutely can’t fault her for making the wise decision she did. And despite me chiming in here online, I hope SB can tune out the proliferation of ideas going around and focus on what she knows to be right for herself.
